A less-than-average golfer's guide to the Treasure Valley — rated for fun, forgiveness, and value
Star is perfect home base for golf. You're minutes from Boise's best courses, but far enough to avoid commute traffic. The Treasure Valley has 20+ courses within 30 minutes, and the high desert setting means 300+ days of sunshine. Winter golf is real here.
This guide focuses on what matters to a recreational golfer: Can I make a decent swing? Will I lose my mind? Is it worth the drive? The ratings are honest — no fluff, no "*this course was designed by a legend so it's amazing*" nonsense.
The Treasure Valley is high desert. Afternoon winds (15-25+ mph) are normal, especially March-May and August-September. Wind adds 2-4 clubs on exposed courses. Play morning rounds when possible. Water hazards become death traps in the wind.
Best: April-May and September-October. Mild temps, minimal wind, perfect conditions.
Winter (Nov-Feb): Playable most days, but mornings are cold (20s-30s). No snow usually. Courses are empty. Great for practice.
Summer (June-Aug): Hot (85-95°F), but mornings are beautiful. Play early. Afternoon is brutal.
Treasure Valley courses are well-maintained but not fancy. Think well-groomed municipal standards, not resort golf. The foothills courses (Shadow Valley, BanBury) are prettier. The valley floor courses (Centennial, RedHawk) are flatter and more forgiving. Desert courses (TimberStone) are beautiful and impossible.
Most courses require carts ($15-$25 extra). River Birch is walkable. Centennial and Warm Springs have walking-friendly layouts. Walking is cheaper — bring a push cart if they allow it.
